Maine bans sweepstakes casinos in crackdown on unregulated gambling
Maine has officially banned sweepstakes casinos, becoming the latest state to crack down on unregulated gambling platforms. The new law, signed by Gov. Janet Mills, targets online sites that mimic casino games or sports betting without proper licensing. The push to outlaw these operations began in December 2022 when Sen. Craig Hickman introduced LD 2007. The bill aimed at platforms using a dual-currency system to offer slot machines, poker, table games, or sports wagers outside licensed markets.
The Senate approved the measure on March 12, 2023, before the House passed it with an 87 to 55 vote on March 26. Gov. Mills signed the legislation into law on April 6, 2023. Under the new rules, fines for violations range from $10,000 to $100,000 per offence. Any gambling licence holder connected to banned platforms risks losing their authorisation. Collected penalties will fund the Gambling Addiction Prevention and Treatment Fund.
The law reinforces Maine’s stance against unregulated gambling. It also directs financial penalties toward addiction support services. Sweepstakes casinos now face strict enforcement and heavy fines if they continue operating in the state.
