Tabcorp CEO demands national overhaul of Australia's gambling laws
Adam Rytenskild, CEO of Tabcorp, is pushing for a national regulatory system in Australia’s wagering industry. He argues that the current rules are outdated and create an uneven playing field for businesses across the country. His proposal comes as tax hikes in New South Wales and Queensland add pressure on operators like Tabcorp. Rytenskild has called the existing framework a 'patchwork quilt' of inconsistent regulations. While Tabcorp holds licences in seven states and territories, many corporate bookmakers rely on Northern Territory permits. This disparity, he claims, leads to loopholes—such as increased gambling ads on TV—and fails to protect the public.
The current laws, over two decades old, no longer match the industry’s rapid changes. Rytenskild warns that weak regulation in one state undermines standards nationwide. To fix this, he proposes a national regulator to enforce uniform rules, safeguard customers, and maintain industry integrity. His plan also involves collaboration between state officials and industry leaders. The goal is to create a single regulatory agreement that levels the field for all operators. This push follows recent tax rises in New South Wales and Queensland, which Tabcorp argues create unfair business conditions.
If adopted, the new framework would replace the fragmented system with consistent national standards. It would also introduce stronger enforcement to hold all wagering operators accountable. Rytenskild’s proposal aims to balance business fairness with better community protections.
