Oklahoma's urgent Mother's Day plea: Moms, quit smoking for your kids' sake
This Mother’s Day, health groups in Oklahoma are urging mums to quit tobacco. The Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline is leading the call, offering free support to those ready to give up smoking. Officials highlight the risks not just to mothers but also to their children’s long-term health. Tobacco remains a major health issue for women across the US, with nearly 20 million adult females still smoking. In Oklahoma, over half of mothers who quit during pregnancy return to smoking within six months of giving birth. The 2014 Surgeon General’s Report revealed that lung cancer now claims more women’s lives each year than breast cancer.
Brandi Fullam, a Tulsa mother, successfully quit with help from the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline’s Quit Coaches. The service provides free coaching and nicotine replacement therapy to registered users. Since 2003, the helpline has assisted more than 250,000 Oklahomans in their quit attempts. The Tobacco Free Coalition for Tulsa County is also sharing advice on shielding children from secondhand smoke. Studies show that kids in smoking households are twice as likely to take up the habit themselves. Meanwhile, the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) continues to push for smoke-free spaces and cessation programmes statewide.
The push for tobacco-free mothers comes with practical support in place. Free coaching, nicotine patches, and public health campaigns aim to reduce smoking rates among women. Officials stress that quitting not only improves a mother’s health but also lowers the chances of her children becoming future smokers.
