Kentucky's $150M Oak Grove Racing & Gaming Complex Breaks Ground

A new $150 million racing and gaming complex is coming to Oak Grove, Kentucky. The project, led by Churchill Downs Inc. and Keeneland, will bring harness racing and historical racing machines to the area. Officials say it will create hundreds of jobs and boost local wagering activity. Construction has begun on Oak Grove Racing & Gaming, a large-scale venue set to open in stages. Racing will start in autumn 2019, while the full complex—including gaming terminals—will launch in 2020. The site will host standardbred harness racing alongside up to 1,500 historical racing machines.

The new complex will take over racing dates previously held by Thunder Ridge Park. Historical racing machines operate by replaying past races through video terminals, allowing players to bet on outcomes. Kentucky already has four similar venues with over 2,700 machines across the state.

Existing instant racing locations have seen strong betting activity. Derby City Gaming, owned by Churchill Downs, has handled nearly $407 million in wagers since opening. Keeneland’s venue has also generated over $231.8 million in bets since July 2018. The Oak Grove project is expected to create around 400 full- and part-time positions. Once fully operational, it will join Kentucky’s growing network of instant racing centres. The complex aims to attract both racing fans and gaming enthusiasts to the region.
