How Gambling Debts Derailed the Finances of NBA and NHL Stars

High-profile athletes and sports figures have faced legal trouble over unpaid gambling debts in recent years. Court records show multimillion-dollar disputes involving former NBA player Antoine Walker, NHL owner Eugene Melnyk, and NHL forward Evander Kane. Each case ended with financial penalties or ongoing legal battles.

In 2011, Antoine Walker was ordered to repay $750,000 in gambling debts to three Las Vegas casinos. The former NBA star later pleaded guilty to one felony charge for writing bad checks. A court sentenced him to five years’ probation.

Eugene Melnyk, owner of the Ottawa Senators, issued five bank drafts totalling $900,000 for a gambling spree at Mohegan Sun in 2017. His bank later refused to honour the payments. The casino has since filed a $1.05 million legal claim against him to recover the unpaid markers. Evander Kane, an NHL forward, received eight lines of credit at The Cosmopolitan in April 2019, amounting to $500,000. He failed to repay the debt, leading the casino to pursue legal action. However, the case was later dismissed, and the casino dropped its claim. Kane had signed a $49 million contract extension with the San Jose Sharks in 2018. He is set to earn $8 million this season.

The legal disputes highlight the financial risks tied to high-stakes gambling. Walker completed probation, while Melnyk’s case remains unresolved. Kane’s dismissed lawsuit means he will not face further legal action over the unpaid markers.
