ESPN fires betting analyst Kelly Stewart over resurfaced homophobic tweets
ESPN has sacked betting analyst Kelly Stewart after homophobic tweets from 2012 resurfaced. The sports handicapper had only joined the network in early May and was due to start her role in June. Stewart confirmed her termination and issued an apology for the offensive language. Stewart first made a name for herself in Las Vegas sports betting circles in 2012. That year, she successfully landed a three-team money-line parlay, drawing attention to her wagering skills. Later in 2014, she won the 'Mini-Contest' at Westgate’s SuperContest, further establishing her reputation.
She was hired by ESPN in early May as an analyst for Daily Wager and other betting programmes. The move was set to expand her profile beyond her existing work with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Bleacher Report, and Wager Talk. Additionally, she runs a proxy betting service through her website, kellyinvegas.com.
Four tweets posted between March and July 2012 contained an anti-gay slur. Three of these were responses to online abuse, while the context of the fourth remains unclear. After the tweets resurfaced, ESPN acted quickly to end her employment before she formally began her new position. Stewart acknowledged the language in her old tweets as 'unacceptable and hurtful'. Her dismissal comes as ESPN enforces its policies on discriminatory conduct. The incident has cut short what was meant to be a high-profile step in her broadcasting career.
