Notorious Chicago mobster 'the Clown' dies in federal prison at 94
Joey Lombardo, a notorious Chicago mobster known as 'the Clown' and 'Lumpy,' has died in a federal maximum-security prison. The 94-year-old was serving a life sentence for a string of serious crimes, including racketeering, murder, and extortion. His death marks the end of a long criminal career tied to organised crime in the US. Lombardo first rose to power as a key figure in the Chicago Outfit, overseeing illegal operations across the city. He controlled the Teamsters Union’s Central States Pension Fund and supervised casino activities in Las Vegas. His influence extended to skimming millions from casinos like the Stardust and the Marina during the 1970s.
In 1986, a court convicted him for hiding his interests in multiple casinos and stealing over $2 million between 1974 and 1978. After serving time, he was released in 1992 but quickly returned to his high-ranking role within the Outfit. Nine years later, he went on the run but was captured by the FBI after nine months in hiding. The 2005 'Family Secrets' investigation led to another indictment, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most powerful mobsters in Chicago. Despite his long criminal record, Lombardo never broke Omerta—the Mafia’s strict code of silence—even until his death. His nicknames reflected his dual nature: 'the Clown' for his sharp wit in court, and 'Lumpy' for his violent streak. Both traits defined his decades-long reign in organised crime.
Lombardo’s death closes a chapter on one of the most infamous figures in Chicago’s criminal history. He spent his final years behind bars, convicted of crimes ranging from financial fraud to murder. His refusal to cooperate with authorities ensured his legacy as a loyal, if ruthless, mob enforcer.
