Massachusetts Lottery Picks Winners for Rare 'MA 250' License Plates

A lottery in Massachusetts has decided who will receive the state’s sought-after ‘MA 250’ commemorative license plates. Thousands entered for a chance to win low-numbered plates marking the 250th anniversary. Two lucky residents secured the top prizes—Steven Nichols claimed plate number 17, while Michael Wilkinson won MA45. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) ran the 250th Anniversary Low Number Plate Lottery, offering plates numbered from 1 to 999, plus the special 1776 plate. A total of 48,457 residents took part in the draw, hoping to win one of the coveted blue plates.

The ‘MA 250’ design is already the most popular specialty plate in the state, with nearly 80,000 drivers using it. Winners now have until August 28 to claim their plates. Those who decline their number will see it passed to an alternate winner from the list published on the RMV’s website. Each plate costs $40, with the fee covering a two-year period. The lottery reflects high demand for these unique, historically themed registrations.

The winners will soon receive their plates, provided they complete the claim process by the deadline. Alternates remain on standby in case any of the top selections are turned down. The plates will stay in use for years, marking Massachusetts’ 250th anniversary on the roads.
