Gambling booms despite slim odds of winning big in lotteries and casinos

Gambling continues to thrive across lotteries, casinos, and online platforms. Recent figures show record-breaking sales in major markets, while the odds of hitting big wins remain slim. From slot machines to national lotteries, players spend billions despite long-shot chances. Lottery sales have surged in key regions. In the US, total spending reached over $107.9 billion in fiscal year 2022. Canada saw similar growth, with lottery sales nearing C$8.9 billion in the same period. The UK also reported a record high, as Camelot UK Lotteries announced National Lottery sales of £4.06bn (€4.67bn/$4.83bn) in the first half of its 2022-23 financial year.

Slot machines dominate casino revenue, both online and offline. They account for around 70% of earnings for most land-based casino operators. Online casinos also rely heavily on slots, which make up the majority of their game offerings. Players in the US can access these games legally if they are 21 or older and located in a regulated state. The chances of winning big remain low. For slot players betting the maximum amount, the odds of hitting the top prize range from one in 5,000 to one in 34 million. Lottery players face even slimmer odds—winning a Mega Millions grand prize stands at one in 302.6 million, while Powerball offers a one-in-292.2 million chance. Return to Player (RTP) rates indicate how much money players can expect back over time, but these figures do not change the long odds of a major win.

Despite the steep odds, gambling industries continue to see massive player spending. Lotteries in the US, Canada, and the UK have all reported record sales in recent years. Meanwhile, slot machines remain the primary revenue driver for casinos, both online and in-person.
