Koblenz Unites Faith and Art in a Unique Ash Wednesday Service
A special Artists' Ash Wednesday service will be held in Koblenz on February 14 at 10 a.m. The event takes place at Herz-Jesu Church on Löhrrondell 1a, bringing together music, theatre, and visual art. Organisers include local churches, the city’s cultural department, and the Association of Visual Artists of the Middle Rhine (AKM). The service will be led by two senior clergy: Superintendent Rolf Stahl of the Protestant Church and Dean Thomas Darscheid of the Catholic Church. Their roles will frame the event’s spiritual focus.
Performances will feature a wide range of local talent. The Rheinische Philharmonie State Orchestra will provide live music, while the Liebfrauen Church Youth Chamber Choir, directed by Deanery Cantor Joachim Aßmann, will also take part. The Koblenz Theater will contribute with its opera chorus and youth theatre, alongside the Music Theater of the Koblenz School of Music. Magician and philosopher Andino will deliver the main address. Visual artist Sophia Pechau will present a triptych representing the Trinity, adding a symbolic dimension to the service. After the worship, attendees can visit the AKM’s new exhibition, *Print – Art in the Singular and Plural*, opening at the Metternich Artists’ House.
The event combines religious tradition with artistic expression. It offers performances by local musicians, actors, and visual artists, followed by an exhibition launch. The service remains free and open to the public.
