London's Iconic Trocadero to Become a Luxury Casino by 2026

The historic Trocadero building in London’s West End is set for a major transformation. Westminster City Council has approved plans by Genting Group to turn the site into a high-end casino. The £40 million project will create a two-storey gambling venue with space for up to 1,250 visitors. The Trocadero, constructed in 1878, has stood largely vacant since 2011. Its basement and first floor will now be repurposed, replacing the former Opium Nightclub, which shut in 2019 following a violent incident. Genting Casinos expects to begin renovations soon, with the aim of opening the venue by October 2026.

Local opposition emerged from the Soho Council community group, which raised concerns about the casino’s alcohol-focused operations. However, Westminster officials dismissed these objections, arguing that casinos operate under strict regulations and do not attract rowdy crowds. The council ultimately backed Genting’s proposal, clearing the way for the redevelopment. The project is expected to bring economic benefits to the area. Genting estimates the refurbishment will generate around 350 new jobs, boosting employment in the West End.

Once complete, the Trocadero will reopen as a ‘world-class’ casino, marking a significant change for the iconic building. The £40 million investment will revive a long-empty space while adding a major gambling destination to central London. Construction is due to start shortly, with doors set to open in late 2026.
