Lithuania cracks down on gambling with strict new ID and loss limits
Lithuania is tightening its gambling laws with a series of strict new rules. Starting in summer 2025, major changes will affect how people bet, how operators advertise, and how the government monitors activity. The reforms aim to curb problem gambling and enforce stricter controls across the industry. From next summer, all gamblers in Lithuania must use an official government-issued ID card linked to their national identification number. This card will track betting activity and allow regulators to communicate directly with operators. If a player hits their monthly loss limit, the system will block further bets until a 30-day reset period passes.
The government will also set fixed monthly loss limits for every player. Once exceeded, the system will prevent any additional wagers. Alongside this, public gambling ads and promotions will be banned entirely by summer 2025.
Another key change is the uniform legal gambling age, now raised to 21 across all platforms. The ID system will also help social services identify individuals at risk of addiction, enabling them to offer targeted support. Additionally, Lithuania will block payments to unregulated offshore gambling sites, forcing all betting through licensed channels. These measures will reshape how gambling operates in Lithuania. Players will face stricter spending controls, while operators must comply with tighter advertising and monitoring rules. The government’s focus remains on reducing harm and ensuring all betting activity stays within regulated systems.
