Ontario cracks down on iGaming operators for compliance failures
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has taken enforcement action against three operators in the province’s regulated iGaming market. PointsBet Canada faces a proposed five-day suspension, while Relax Gaming and Arrise Solutions have each received CA$40,000 penalties. The measures follow breaches of strict standards designed to protect consumers and maintain market integrity. PointsBet Canada’s proposed suspension stems from its failure to properly report suspicious betting activity linked to former NBA player Jontay Porter. The company is currently appealing the decision, with a final ruling still pending.
Meanwhile, Relax Gaming and Arrise Solutions were penalised for allowing their games to appear on unlicensed gambling websites. The AGCO highlighted that such unregulated platforms increase risks related to player safety, fraud, money laundering, and match-fixing. Both companies cooperated fully with the investigation and quickly blocked further access from unlicensed sites in Ontario.
Ontario’s regulated iGaming market operates under strict rules to ensure responsible gambling and game fairness. The AGCO’s actions reinforce these standards by holding operators accountable for compliance failures. The penalties and proposed suspension serve as a reminder of the AGCO’s commitment to enforcing compliance in Ontario’s gambling sector. Operators must adhere to reporting requirements and prevent their products from being used on unlicensed platforms. The outcome of PointsBet Canada’s appeal will determine whether its suspension is upheld.
