Hairspray Takes the Stage in Reedley with Energy and Heart

The Reedley Opera House is staging Hairspray, a lively musical set in the early 1960s. Packed with catchy songs, energetic dancing, and a mix of humour and heartfelt moments, the show follows Tracy, a young girl with big dreams. Her unexpected rise to fame on a local TV programme sparks both controversy and inspiration. Hairspray tells the story of Tracy, a cheerful but overweight teenager who longs to dance on The Corny Collins Show. Played by Chelsea Harper, she defies expectations by earning a spot—despite not fitting the show’s usual image. The production also stars Jeff Lusk as her mother, Edna, and Dominic Grijalva as Seaweed, a friend who supports her fight for fairness.

The musical tackles serious themes alongside its fun-loving energy. Tracy befriends Black teenagers who are only allowed on the show once a month, during *Negro Day*. Determined to challenge this rule, she pushes for equality, even ending up in jail at one point. Her actions highlight the show’s messages of self-acceptance and the impact one person can have. Local talent brings the production to life, from direction and set design to costumes. Lillie Valencia handles the iconic 1960s hairstyles, adding to the show’s vibrant look. Audiences can expect well-known numbers like *Good Morning Baltimore*, *Without Love*, and the uplifting finale, *You Can’t Stop the Beat*. *Hairspray* runs at the Reedley Opera House until 3 August. Tickets are available through the venue’s website and KRL’s theatre events page.

The musical blends laughter, tears, and powerful lessons about equality and courage. With its mix of high-energy performances and meaningful storytelling, Hairspray offers entertainment for all ages. Performances continue through early August, giving audiences plenty of chances to catch the show.
