Weingarten, Baden-Würtemberg: Firefighters battle blaze in Karlsruhe district
A fire at a locksmith's shop in the Karlsruhe district turned into a major operation as over 100 firefighters worked to put out the flames. The approximately 300 square meter hall was already severely engulfed in flames, with gas cylinders stored inside posing a risk of explosion. Fire department spokesman Thomas Becker explains, "This is why the area had to be evacuated within a radius of 250 meters, and 21 people were safely brought to safety by police and firefighters."
The immediate fire-fighting efforts were successful in containing the blaze, but the flames spread to the neighboring residential building and set the roof truss ablaze. A police helicopter monitored the scene from the air, while the fire department transported water to the housing estate using long pipes.
Throughout the night, the technical relief organization examined the charred roof truss for any remaining pockets of embers, with firefighters using an aerial rescue platform to douse any found. However, the cause of the fire remains unknown, and the damage is estimated to be in the high six-figure euro range.
