Law enforcement operation underway. - Fierce altercation among basketball spectators leads to near-fatal injuries.

There was a serious altercation between basketball fans that led to one person being critically injured at the Prenzlauer Allee S-Bahn station in Berlin. The fire department confirmed the incident when asked by the German Press Agency, but provided no additional details.

It was reported by "t-online" that around 60 people engaged in a violent brawl, with fans of the clubs from Athens and Piraeus being involved. These two Greek clubs were playing in the Euroleague Final Four in Berlin that weekend - Panathinaikos Athens was facing Real Madrid in the final while Olympiakos Piraeus was playing Fenerbahce Istanbul for third place. There had been other incidents at the arena at Ostbahnhof earlier in the week, resulting in two police officers being slightly injured.

During the skirmish on Saturday night, weapons like baseball bats and batons were used, and several people were hurt. Initially, it was uncertain how many individuals were injured in the fight. A police spokesman stated that 89 provisional arrests were made for the purpose of establishing identities, and charges for assault and grievous bodily harm were brought against many people.

The police also treated the injured alongside the fire department, who transported the most severely hurt person to the hospital. Shortly after, another confrontation took place in front of a hotel in the Spandau district involving approximately 50 people who were all supporters of the basketball clubs. Provisional arrests were also made in this incident, and authorities are conducting an investigation into the illegal use of pyrotechnics.

This set of events has further highlighted the tensions between the teams' supporters and the need for stricter control to avoid further incidents during sports events in the future.
