Championship Match - Greifswald rejoices after qualifying for the DFB Cup against Dortmund.
Greifswalder FC is eager to face well-known opponents in the DFB Cup. As former Hansa player Guido Kocer put it, "Borussia Dortmund wouldn't be bad. Hertha wouldn't be bad. It's all about having a thrilling game with a packed stadium - that's the best part."
Following their clear 5:0 victory over TSG Neustrelitz in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state cup final, Greifswalder FC secured a spot in the first main round of next season's DFB Cup (August 16-19). The matchups will be announced on ARD's "Sportschau" next Saturday at 6 p.m.
Goals against Neustrelitz were scored by Mike Eglseder (4th minute), Oliver Deadlow (32nd), Soufian Benyamina (43rd/55th), and David Vogt (65th). The underdogs voiced their satisfaction for avenging their 2022 state cup final loss to TSG.
Despite the disappointment of missing promotion to the third division, Greifswald managed to overcome their 2,610 fans at the Volksstadion. They had lost to FC Energie Cottbus in the Regionalliga Nordost's final matchday just a week before.
"Missing out on promotion, missing out on the championship - it's a bit of relief. Still, it was one of the hardest games since we failed to achieve the major goal. But credit to the team. We have a fantastic squad," said midfielder Niklas Brandt.
Sporting director David Wagner jetted off to Mallorca on Sunday to commemorate the season. "Second place isn't considered the runner-up for me. Our team had an excellent season. We've made great progress in Greifswald. The players have been remarkable representatives of the club and the city of Greifswald," he said.
