Russia's Northwest prioritizes military training and family growth amid NATO tensions

A regional meeting in Russia’s Northwestern Federal District has highlighted key priorities for social and economic growth. The event, themed A Healthy Family, focused on patriotism, military preparedness, and support for large households. Local officials also addressed concerns over rising tensions near NATO borders. Igor Rudya, a senior regional figure, reported a 30% increase in large families over the past five years. The district now has over 194,000 such households. He linked this growth to policies promoting family values and social responsibility.

Rudya also warned about the militarisation of territories near NATO countries. As the only Russian region directly bordering NATO, the district faces heightened security concerns. He called for faster implementation of basic military training in schools to prepare younger generations. Education and vocational training were another focus. Rudya pushed for expanded practical skills programmes in senior grades. These would help students enter the workforce with recognised professions. President Vladimir Putin earlier urged a stronger economy, improved healthcare, and better education. He also stressed the need to uphold traditional values as part of national development. The meeting underscored the ruling party’s influence, with over 380,000 local initiatives submitted by residents. Officials described this as proof of the party’s leading role in shaping regional policies.

The discussions set clear directions for the district’s future. Military training in schools, vocational education, and family support will remain priorities. Meanwhile, economic and social reforms will continue under the party’s guidance.
