Krasnoyarsk Authorities Order Incineration of 4-Ton Tomato Shipment from China
Russia destroys four-ton tomato shipment infected with deadly plant virus
A four-ton batch of tomatoes imported from China and stored at the Agroterminal-Customs temporary warehouse in Krasnoyarsk has been slated for destruction after Russia's agricultural watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor, confirmed the produce was infected with the tomato brown rugose fruit virus.
"The virus leaves plants no chance of survival," agency officials explained, justifying the drastic measure. "Once detected, all infected plants must be burned immediately to prevent further spread."
The disease can devastate an entire greenhouse crop in as little as a week. Highly resilient, the virus transmits between plants through direct contact, contaminated tools, hands, clothing, or soil. It can also spread via pollinating insects, including bees and bumblebees.
