Puerto Rico's Legendary El San Juan Casino Gets a $12.5M Revival by Foxwoods
A historic Puerto Rican casino is set for a major revival. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, owners of Foxwoods Resort Casino, will invest $12.5 million to renovate the El San Juan casino inside the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel. Once a glamorous winter retreat for celebrities in the 1960s, the venue will reopen as the Foxwoods El San Juan Casino before 2022.
The Mashantucket Tribe plans to complete the project by late 2021. This marks their first casino venture outside Connecticut. The renovated space will feature slot machines, table games, and possibly a sportsbook if Puerto Rico legalises sports betting.
The investment will also restore the Tropicoro entertainment area at the resort. Beyond gaming, the project aims to create 150 permanent jobs and generate $22 million annually for Puerto Rico’s economy. The Mashantucket Tribe joins another Connecticut-based group, the Mohegan Tribe, in expanding globally. Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment already operates casinos across the US and Canada, with upcoming projects in Las Vegas, South Korea, and Greece.
The Foxwoods El San Juan Casino will bring back a piece of Puerto Rico’s mid-century glamour. With job creation and economic growth on the horizon, the tribe’s $12.5 million renovation aims to restore the site’s status as a key entertainment destination. Operations are expected to begin before the end of 2021.
