Lisbon's New Combat Gym Blends Boxing, Tech and Affordable HIIT Workouts
That Moment of Blind Confidence—Before Reality Hits
Before slipping on the boxing gloves, there's always that fleeting moment of absolute confidence—the kind that whispers, You've got this. You're in peak form, ready to take on anything. But the body often has other plans, and the second the real work begins, it fights back.
That pretty much sums up how we felt stepping into a "smart boxing" session at BHOUT, a fitness club offering 45-minute HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) workouts structured around nine rounds of combat sports, strength exercises, and meditation.
Were we actually ready? Absolutely not. But we made it to the end—exhausted, yes, but thoroughly satisfied.
You, the Bag, the Music, the Lights—All in Perfect Sync. Ready for This Round?
First things first: What exactly is HIIT? It's a training method that alternates between short bursts of maximum effort (or high intensity) and brief recovery periods (or low intensity).
In short, we're talking high-impact cardio that boosts aerobic capacity, torches calories fast (600 to 1,000 per BHOUT session), and requires no equipment—just your body weight.
And that's exactly the kind of HIIT you'll find at BHOUT (which has five locations in Lisbon), packaged as a game.
When Your Workout Becomes a Game
The challenges at BHOUT are no joke: 45 minutes of pounding a high-tech punching bag.
At first, you might think, "Can I really last 45 minutes? Of course I can!" But reality quickly sets in. Still, there's no need to throw in the towel at the first sign of fatigue—here's why.
What sets these clubs apart is the technology built into the equipment, especially the punching bag you'll face throughout the session.
Each bag is fitted with a screen that tracks your progress in real time, displaying elapsed time, your score, and the force of every strike—data you can review afterward on the BHOUT mobile app. The system keeps you locked in (because let's be honest, no one wants to finish last).
Sessions blend boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai moves, punctuated by short recovery phases to steady your heart rate.
Lights, Sweat, and Zero Judgment
Physical exhaustion kicks in fast—and that's completely normal. For those unaccustomed to intense workouts, just five minutes can shatter any illusion of ease, leaving even the toughest beginners sprawled on the floor (yes, we've been there).
Leaving the studio drained and gasping for air is all part of the process, but the coach's support helps push through the fatigue, fostering a no-judgment culture.
For less experienced participants, the on-site coach adjusts exercises to ensure no one gets left behind, culminating in a final minute of "explosive" moves that leave everyone breathless.
Tech That Makes Life Easier—and a Few Extra Perks
Even if you're not a gym regular or a crossfit enthusiast, BHOUT's tech-driven environment is seriously impressive. From booking sessions via the app to checking in and unlocking your personal locker—all managed through your phone—it doesn't get much smoother.
After each session, you can freshen up in the private changing rooms (complete with showers), along with all the essentials: hairdryers, sinks, and mirrors.
And since fitness isn't just about the workout, BHOUT clubs also have a social side—a small lounge area where you can hang out (before or after class) with fellow "boxers," complete with free coffee and drinks.
