Hermès Saut Showjumping Celebrates Craftsmanship and Luxury in Paris

The Hermès Saut showjumping competition returns to Paris this weekend for its 16th edition. Held at the Grand Palais, the event highlights the luxury brand’s deep roots in equestrian craftsmanship—a tradition stretching back to 1837. Alongside the competition, Hermès continues to invest in the future of saddlery, blending heritage with modern training. Hermès first specialised in equestrian equipment nearly two centuries ago. Today, saddlery remains at the heart of its artisanal identity. Each saddle, retailing between €7,500 and €8,200, is handcrafted by a single artisan over roughly a week. The process demands precision, as every piece is custom-made for a specific rider.

The most challenging skill for saddlers is achieving perfect symmetry and balance. Unlike mass production, Hermès artisans rely on their eyes rather than machines. Mastery takes time—typically two to three years before a saddler works independently. To sustain this craft, Hermès has partnered with the Haras du Pin vocational school. The collaboration aims to train a new generation of skilled saddlers. Meanwhile, the brand’s Louviers workshop has expanded rapidly, growing from four to 14 craftsmen since opening in 2023. The Saut competition itself has become a staple of Parisian equestrian culture. Since its 2010 debut, the event has drawn top riders and spectators to the Grand Palais. This year’s edition further cements Hermès’ dual role as a luxury powerhouse and guardian of traditional craftsmanship.

Hermès is on track to reach €16 billion in revenue by 2025. The brand’s commitment to saddlery, from training programmes to high-end production, ensures its heritage thrives. As the Saut competition unfolds, the focus remains on both sporting excellence and the meticulous artistry behind every saddle.
