Expansion of Strategic Partnership between Canal+ and Netflix in Sub-Saharan Africa

In a significant move for the streaming industry, global media and pay-TV provider Canal+ and streaming giant Netflix have announced a partnership that will bring a unique, bundled service to 24 French-speaking African countries starting July 2023.

Canal+, with its roots in Issy-les-Moulineaux, France, is a broadcaster, financing entity, production house, and operator/MVPD/telco. The company has a deep commitment to localising content, particularly in Africa, and is known for identifying trailblazers and monetization playbooks in mobile-first storytelling.

The partnership will see the merging of Canal+ and Netflix's content offerings, providing subscribers with a diverse array of entertainment. The bundled service will feature global Netflix hits such as Stranger Things, La Casa de Papel, Lupin, Emily in Paris, and Squid Game, alongside acclaimed African shows like Blood & Water, King of Boys, Anikulapo, and Blood Sisters. This marks Netflix's first distribution integration of this kind in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Emma Lloyd, VP of Partnerships EMEA at Netflix, described the move as "a big win... allowing us to reach even more people across French-speaking African countries." Pascale Chabert, Chief Content Acquisition Officer at Canal+, emphasized that subscribers will now enjoy "the best of Canal+ and Netflix content in a joint package."

Canal+ offers over 400 live channels, including 28 local channels, via its app and IPTV platform. The company is involved in broadcasting, catch-up/VOD, content acquisition, financing, production, scripted production, and television production.

The website, which tracks global Film & TV projects, partners, and deals to find vendors, financiers, commissioners, licensors, and licensees, will be following the developments closely. It has also been comparing Netflix vs. Amazon Prime Video's playbooks in the streaming industry and will be asking critical questions about global TV+Film productions in August.

This partnership comes as the website decodes the competitive fault lines and strategic overlaps shaping the new era of streaming. The collaboration between Canal+ and Netflix is set to redefine the streaming landscape in French-speaking Africa, offering subscribers a unique and exciting viewing experience.
