EU's AMLA targets gaming sector in new anti-money laundering crackdown
The European Union’s Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA) has launched consultations on three new technical standards affecting customer checks, business relationships, and reporting weaknesses. These draft rules aim to tighten oversight in sectors beyond traditional banking—including gaming. The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) is now urging its licensees to take part before key deadlines in 2026. AMLA, set up in 2024 to improve coordination across EU states, is refining technical standards before they become law. The proposals cover stricter customer due diligence, the handling of linked transactions in business relationships, and rules for reporting material weaknesses. For the first time, the authority is seeking input from non-financial industries, such as gaming.
The MGA has stressed the importance of this consultation, warning that low participation could lead to standards that fail to account for how gambling operators actually work. Licensees have until **9 March 2026** to submit feedback on draft rules under **Article 53(10) of AMLD6**, and until **8 May 2026** for responses on **Articles 28(1) and 19(9)** of the AML Regulation. This push follows growing concerns about money laundering in online gambling. A recent assessment by the Isle of Man rated the sector as **medium-high risk**, citing issues like criminal ownership of gambling firms, front companies, and the use of stolen identities. Organised crime groups have also exploited gambling services to move illicit funds, prompting stricter scrutiny.
The consultation offers gaming operators a chance to shape how money laundering risks are managed under EU rules. Submissions will help ensure the final standards reflect the realities of the industry. Deadlines for feedback remain in place for early and mid-2026.
