Bangladesh to modernize gambling laws targeting online betting risks

Bangladesh is set to overhaul its gambling laws with a new legal framework targeting online betting and wagering. The current legislation, dating back to 1867, has struggled to keep pace with modern challenges like offshore betting sites and mobile gaming platforms. Officials now describe the rapid growth of online gambling as a serious risk to the country’s youth and economy.

The existing Public Gambling Act of 1867, introduced under British colonial rule, bans most forms of gambling in Bangladesh. But the rise of digital platforms—including offshore betting websites and mobile gaming—has made enforcement difficult. Authorities warn that these platforms pose a growing threat to social stability and economic security.

The government is now finalising a draft law to replace the outdated legislation. The new framework will focus on online gambling, betting operations, and digital wagering. Some exceptions will remain for government-approved lotteries and certain horse racing bets. Salahuddin, a senior official, called the spread of betting platforms a 'major threat' to the nation. The proposed law aims to create a technology-driven system to better regulate and control online gambling activities. The draft is expected to be presented in the next parliamentary session.

The updated legislation will mark a significant shift from the 19th-century law still in place today. By addressing online betting and modern enforcement challenges, the government hopes to curb illegal gambling activities. The new rules will also clarify which wagers remain permitted under the law.
