Neil Robertson misses out on qualification

The biggest shock of the qualifying round: Neil Robertson, 42, failed to secure a spot in the 2024 Snooker World Championship after losing 9:10 to Jamie Jones, 36, in the fourth round. This marks the first time since 2000 that the 2010 World Champion won't participate in the season's most renowned event.

Robertson acknowledged his struggles this season, leading to a decline in world rankings and missing out on automatic qualification. Following the match, he shared his disappointment on social media [message in English]:

Man, that hurts. Much respect to Jamie, though; I barely had a chance from 8-5 down, he played superbly. This has been a tough season all around – a break is clearly needed. Thanks, everyone, for your continued support. I'll be back much stronger next season, I guarantee it.

Noppon Saengkham's elimination was another surprise for snooker fans and experts. Currently ranked 22nd globally, Saengkham displayed remarkable form during the qualifiers, even clinching a century break in the second round, which earned him a £10,000 (approx. €11,679) prize. Regrettably, he fell short in the fourth round against Jackson Page, 22, and was unable to secure a spot in the tournament.

Lukas Kleckers, the sole German player in the qualifiers, was eliminated in the third round. Following a tight first-round victory, he lost 5:10 to Chris Wakelin, 32.

Hossein Vafaei excelled throughout the qualifiers for the 2024 Snooker World Championship.

During this year's Snooker World Championship qualifiers, several players displayed impressive form. Notably, Hossein Vafaei, 29, claimed a spot in the World Championship final with a 10-5 victory against Jiang Jun, 18. Earlier, he defeated Marco Fu, 46, 10-4, who was previously part of the Snooker elite.

Before the tournament, Mark Selby, 40, praised the high level of this season's Snooker and singled out Hossein Vafaei as a formidable opponent:

"There have been some tough matches in recent years, and you could pick out four or five players you wouldn't want to face. But this time, there are more than ever. Neil [Robertson] will be a challenge for anyone. [...] There's also Hossein Vafaei, Ricky Walden, Anthony McGill, Jack Lisowski, Bingham. There are directly eight or nine – Mark Selby, Snooker Player, Eurosport"

Vafaei is currently ranked 19th globally and is currently enjoying a successful season. He recently defeated seven-time World Champion Ronnie O’Sullivan at the World Open in Yushan. Vafaei is considered a tough challenge for the Snooker elite.

In the draw for the Snooker World Championship, Hossein Vafaei was drawn against Judd Trump, 34.

Women Snooker Players Struggle to Advance

Several women snooker players also entered the qualifiers for the Snooker World Championship, having previously qualified through tournament victories or their world rankings.

None of the contesting ladies managed to bag a win in the matches. The current Women's Snooker World Champion, Bai Yulu, 20, suffered a 7-10 defeat in the initial round against Jenson Kendrick, 23. Similarly, Baipat Siripaporn, 24, Reanne Evans, 38, Rebecca Kenna, 35, and Mink Nutcharut, 24, were unable to advance past the opening round and won't be making an appearance at the World Championship.
