Once they've signed with Werder, - Weiser shares news about the Champion League.
Werder Bremen officially confirmed the extension of Mitchell Weiser's contract on a Friday. After lengthy negotiations, both parties reached an agreement. Following their 4:1 victory over Bochum in the season's closing game, the right-back revealed what prompted this move.
Weiser expressed, "The environment here felt right. Everyone gets along, and I love coming to work each day. And I appreciate a challenge. I originally joined the team in the second division and this year we've improved compared to the previous season."
Mitchell Weiser Discusses his Werder Extension
Due to his remarkable performances this season, other clubs expressed interest in signing Weiser. However, there were no reported high-profile offers.
Weiser stated, "There was a lot of uncertainty. It's natural to consider different options. Clubs were aware of my availability and of course they showed interest. But I always mentioned to Werder that I wished to stay if everything was right."
It seemed that the opportunity to join Werder in July 2023 was available, but Weiser opted to wait for better prospects. That decision is now a thing of the past, as Weiser recounted his negotiations with Werder, "There were some delays on their part, but I spoke with Clemens (Werder's managing director, Fritz, a few weeks ago)."
Despite this later timing, Werder managed to secure a vital deal before the summer break. Weiser then shared his ambitions for the team: "We've lost critical personnel (specifically, Niclas Füllkrug) and struggled at first this season. There's more to achieve - both in the DFB Cup and the league. Our ultimate goal is to compete on an international stage. In the long run, Werder needs to feature in the Champions League!"
Up to this point, the contract's validity remains unclear, though it's confirmed to be extended until at least 2026.
