Victoria Coren Mitchell Becomes First EPT Player to Win Twice
Broadcaster, writer, and journalist Victoria Coren Mitchell achieved a remarkable feat in poker by becoming the only player to win two European Poker Tour titles. Her latest victory took place at the EPT San Remo Main Event on Easter Sunday, where she defeated 555 competitors and pocketed €476,100 ($658,125). This triumph arrived 7.5 years after her initial success at the 2006 EPT London, making her the first-ever female EPT champion.
"I WON!," she proclaimed to her 236,000 Twitter followers following her win. "Sorry for the language on Easter Sunday, but I WON! Thanks to everyone for their support."
Dedicated Advocate of Poker
A key member of Team PokerStars, Coren Mitchell has been a passionate advocate of poker on mainstream platforms for many years. Her role as the host of the BBC quiz show "Only Connect," along with appearances on various comedy panel shows, has made her a familiar face in the UK. The media attention generated by her victory is favourable for poker.
Coren Mitchell contributed as a poker columnist in the UK's most prestigious broadsheet, The Guardian, for several years, and in 2009, she published her amusing and personal book, "For Richer, for Poorer – A Love Affair with Poker," recounting her life and experiences at the poker table. Born to the late comedian and broadcaster Alan Coren and the food critic Giles Coren, she tied the knot with actor and comic David Mitchell in 2012.
Connor Mitchell's triumph at San Remo was extra commendable, given that she started the final table with a short stack and anticipated being eliminated in ninth place. She tactically picked her moments and managed to cling on, as her opponents gradually left the arena. A key turning point was when she double-through against Jordan Westmorland, holding A-K against A-Q.
"HOW IS THIS HAPPENING??"
The most critical hand occurred soon after, with Westmorland raising in position with Q-10. Coren Mitchell responded with a three-bet using A-10 from the big blind. Westmorland called, and a flop of 2-10-10 followed suit, whereupon Coren Mitchell executed a check-raise. They both checked the turn, with Coren Mitchell leading with a value bet on the river, prompting Westmorland to shove all-in. Coren Mitchell called, putting Westmorland out of the competition.
"Heads-up! I knocked out lovely Jordan Westmorland, now it's just me and Giacomo Fundaro for the title," Coren Mitchell tweeted in disbelief.
The heads-up round was tight. The conclusion arrived when Coren Mitchell landed two pair by raising with Q-J on the button, forcing Fundaro to call with his aces. Fundaro couldn't beat them, resulting in his elimination.
After years participating in over 100 Main Events, someone at last claimed a second EPT title. And there couldn't have been a more well-liked and deserving player than Victoria Coren Mitchell.
