In the wee hours of the morning, a van slammed into the car ahead of it on the BAB 72, situated between the Stollberg and Hartenstein junctions in the Erzgebirgskreis district. The fatal collision happened around 8 AM.
The driver of the van met his end soon after, trapped in his van's cab due to the sheer force of the collision. The driver of the car that was rammed was pushed into a truck and articulated lorry. He, too, was badly hurt and had to be rushed to the hospital.
To free the fatally injured van driver, the fire department from Stollberg and Niederdorf, Saxony, had to bring out the big guns - heavy equipment to cut him out of the wreckage.
The aftermath of the crash saw a massive traffic jam covering a kilometer on the bustling A 72, with the direction towards Hof being particularly affected. Over thirty-five emergency crews were hurriedly called to the scene. The road remained closed for hours.
