Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled the 2025 budget last January 16, 2024, seemingly disregarding potential profits from the iGaming sector. This omission has experts speculating that the legalization of online gambling in New York might not be near.
Ignoring Potential Opportunities
Not too long ago, Senator Joseph Addabbo proposed a solid proposal to legalize online gambling in the state, as detailed in an industry publication, iGaming Business.
The proposed legislation entails a 31.5% tax on gross gaming revenues, a portion of which would be devoted to gambling addiction prevention and education.
Despite the substantial earnings from the legalized sports betting sector, the incorporation of iGaming, comprising online casinos and digital lotteries, appears absent from the budget plans. Whether this is a deliberate snub or Governor Hochul's reluctance to work with questionable revenue sources is yet to be determined. As reported by iGaming Business, the iGaming sector is noted to be "gunning for legalization."
Licensing Discrepancies in the USA
Online sports betting has become legalized in 39 out of 50 American states. Vermont recently joined the list of states issuing licenses to online bookmakers.
However, this isn't the case for online casinos. Apart from Rhode Island, where operations are planned to start in March 2024, only seven states allow iGaming. On the other hand, physical casinos are illegal only in nine states.
The Election Agenda in 2026
It remains uncertain whether the iGaming industry will secure any advancements during Governor Hochul's reign. New York's next election is slated for 2026.
It also seems unclear if the distribution of additional land-based casino licenses, let alone the opening of the proposed gaming facilities, will be completed by then. Consequently, gambling could be a significant topic in the upcoming election campaign.
Despite Governor Hochul's current budget plans seemingly omitting online casinos Germany in New York, German online gamblers might still find interest in visiting online casinos in Germany, given its legal status and availability of gaming options. In contrast, the legalization of online casinos in New York remains a contentious issue, affected by the governor's budget considerations and the prospect of regulatory changes.
