The German tennis professionals at Wimbledon 2024: What's the status?

Alexander Zverev wins opening match at Wimbledon in dominant fashion, advances to next round. Angelique Kerber eliminated after poor performance in first round. Overview of German tennis pros' results on Wimbledon's hallowed grass and a look ahead to next round matches.

Zverev Impresses, Advances to Next Round at Wimbledon

German tennis pro Alexander Zverev has comfortably advanced to the next round of the ATP Wimbledon Championships 2024, showcasing a strong performance to defeat Spanish opponent Roberto Carbales Baena in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.

Zverev's powerful serve combined with quick and precise returns put him on track for victory early on. He broke his opponent's serve multiple times and thrilled fans with strategic and aggressive shots from the baseline, much like his performance at the ATP Tennis Masters in Rome. Zverev seemed unstoppable in his opening match, leaving Carbales Baena with little chance of victory.

If Zverev can maintain this level of play and replicate it in upcoming matches, he could potentially reach the Wimbledon final. In a post-match press conference, Zverev expressed confidence (watch video in English).

Struff and Altmaier Progress, Koepfer, Marterer, and Hanfmann Exit

Five more German men's tennis players were in action at Wimbledon 2024. Jan-Lennard Struff overcame Fabian Marozsan from Hungary in four sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. Despite losing the second set tiebreak, Struff kept his composure and dominated with his strong serve in the third and fourth sets, leaving Marozsan with no chance.

Daniel Altmaier displayed remarkable comeback skills against British player Arthur Fery. Trailing 1-2, Altmaier had to win the next two sets to avoid an early exit. He stepped up his game and took the fourth and fifth sets, joining Zverev and Struff as the third German to advance to the next round at Wimbledon 2024.

Maximilian Marterer and Yannick Hanfmann suffered defeats in their opening matches. Marterer lost 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 to Spanish opponent Roberto Bautista Agut in under two hours. Hanfmann fell to Italian champion Jannik Sinner in four sets, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6.

Dominik Koepfer withdrew from his opening match against Italian Fabio Fognini due to an ankle injury and is also out of the tournament.

Angelique Kerber Exits After Disappointing Performance

German Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber lost her first-round match against Kazakhstani player Yulia Putintseva in straight sets, 5-7, 3-6. Kerber struggled throughout the WTA Wimbledon Championships 2024 opener, losing her first service game in the first set and struggling with her first serve and inaccurate groundstrokes. She failed to turn the match around in the second set, falling behind 0-3 early on.

Putintseva shone with her powerful serve, not allowing a single break point in the entire second set. Kerber, despite her expectations, couldn't find her old form on the hallowed grass of Wimbledon.

Siegemund is the only German tennis player to advance

The German women's tennis record in the first round is disappointing. Only Laura Siegemund managed to win her opening match, defeating Ukrainian Kateryna Baindl in two sets 6:4, 6:1 to advance to the next round of Wimbledon.

Alongside Alexander Zverev, Jan-Lennard Struff and Daniel Altmaier also won their opening matches. Martenie, Hanfmann, and Koepfer, on the other hand, have been eliminated.

Tatjana Maria had to bow out to British player Katie Boulter with a score of 6:7, 5:7, and is out of the tournament. Eva Lys also lost in the first round to French player Clara Burel with a score of 2:6, 4:6.
