Politicians halt environmental frenzy. - The decision to ban the operation of a water ski facility has been reversed.

In the final gathering before the impending local elections, Dresden's town councilors cleared the path and gave a nod of approval for the much-postponed opening of the water ski facility in Leuben. The next day - a Friday - mastermind Martin Riedel (51) could finally set sail and clear the vessel!

This came after a series of burdensome bureaucratic antics with the Dresden city administration. When Riedel had managed to run his operation on site at the quarry pit without a hitch for 18 years, all of a sudden he was notified by town hall: "No can do."

The culprit: the department of the environmentally-conscious building mayor Stephan Kühn (44). His employees complained that the establishment on the riverbanks of the former open-cast gravel mine was located in a protection area for landscapes. Their demand: Riedel should take down his mobile units and tools and relocate them 70 meters farther away from the shore onto a municipal lawn.

Despite resistance, lawyer's letters and even heartfelt requests from politicians, the bureaucrats refused to budge. They also banned the use of the water ski facility from this year onwards.

Led by the CDU group leader Heike Ahnert (43) and fellow city counselor Steffen Kaden (53), along with the backing of other parties in the Dresden City Council, they thwarted the administration and ended the ridiculous situation, at least temporarily. Riedel is given the go-ahead to continue operations, but only until the following year — with a tolerance. The administration's requirement: relocation.

More hurdles for the administration

SPD counselor Kristin Sturm (39) is pushing for a land swap — the facility would remain in its place and the city's lawn would become a designated protection area for landscapes instead.

Their idea is gaining support from the new Dresden movement "Team Zastrow."
