Temporary Casino in Danville by Caesars Assists with City's Capital Endeavors
Caesars Temporary Casino in Danville, Virginia, which opened in May last year, has made a significant impact on the local community. The associated revenue from gaming taxes allocated to the host city along the North Carolina border is already being put to good use.
The city council of Danville has decided to use $2 million in gaming taxes to fund critical projects in the area. Local officials praise the temporary casino, which offers 800 slot machines, 33 table games, and sports betting kiosks, for exceeding its budgeted expectations.
Councilor Lee Vogler expressed his satisfaction with the casino, stating during a meeting, "It wasn’t just about, 'Hey, let's have a casino come here.' It was about what it means for the community."
Due to the unexpected influx of revenue, the Danville city government will be spending $2 million on two projects, each receiving $1 million. One project will focus on building a water splash pad at Ballou Park. This is a summer recreational spot that does not need lifeguards and eliminates the need for standing water.
The second $1 million will be spent on installing underground electrical lines along West Main Street near the casino entrance.
The proposed projects will go through the approval process via local ordinances presented during the February 20th council meeting. These ordinances are set to be finalized through a vote on March 5th.
Casino Privilege
Danville is one of five cities that received the legal privilege to host a casino through state legislation enacted in 2020. Local residents endorsed the casino project in collaboration with Caesars Entertainment during the November 2020 election.
Caesars is currently building a $500 million permanent casino resort at the former Dan River Mills textile site. The casino will incorporate the iconic "Three Sisters" smokestacks, an enduring landmark of the town.
As per Virginia's commercial gaming law, approved casino projects can open temporary gaming sites during the construction of the permanent resort. This temporary tent structure by Caesars has been a triumph for the gaming giant and the town alike.
Since its launch in mid-May, the temporary Danville casino has generated an impressive $164.5 million in gross gaming revenue (GGR). Danville receives 6% of this GGR, amounting to around $9.9 million.
Caesars Virginia Information
Upon completion, Caesars Virginia, as the resort will be called, will feature a 12-story hotel with 320 rooms, a casino floor including 1,300 slot machines, 85 live dealer table games, a World Series of Poker Room, and a Caesars Sportsbook. The resort will also comprise a full-service spa and pool, an array of dining options ranging from fine dining to quick-casual, a 2,500-seat concert hall, and 40,000 square feet of conference space.
Caesars Virginia will primarily target Northern North Carolina, a region that does not have commercial casinos. Caesars operates two tribal casinos in the mountainous, largely rural southwestern part of North Carolina on behalf of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
