The Head of the Federal Republic - Steinmeier: No political animosity in post-war Germany

During a speech in Bonn, President Steinmeier urged the unity of democrats. The young Federal Republic, with its capital in Bonn, could serve as an inspiration, he said at the annual "Festival of Democracy" celebrating 75 years of the country's constitution. "Bonn somehow exuded a sense of calm composure that benefited the nation," he added on Saturday.

While there were certainly intense political debates before German reunification, Steinmeier emphasized, "we remained united - and, considering the divided state of Germany at the time, we were conscious of one goal: to safeguard and preserve our young democracy together. Now, more than ever, we must uphold this sense of solidarity among democrats amidst all the disputes. In today's climate, it's more vital than ever to showcase our unity."

Steinmeier also mentioned the humble nature of Bonn's government. For example, the President's official residence, Villa Hammerschmidt, was surprisingly modest when compared to international standards. "This was deliberate," he explained.

Moreover, Bonn was the site of the creation and proclamation of the Basic Law - one of the Constitution's most significant milestones - by the Parliamentary Council 75 years prior. Steinmeier considered it a remarkable accomplishment: "The Basic Law has guided us through the many twists and turns of post-war history."

The early days of the Federal Republic seemed distant, as showcased by old film footage of first Federal President Theodor Heuss giving a speech on Bonn's town square after his election in September 1949. The crowd then sang the hymn "Great God, we praise you!"

Compared to the period's other aspects, Steinmeier found the original language of the Basic Law remarkably fresh and timeless: "Despite the differences, the original text still retains an air of elegance and agelessness."
