Since 2023, over 1,500 reports have been logged: The GGL online platform serves to monitor unlawful gaming activities.
The Gambling Regulatory Authority of the Nations (GRN) operates an informant system where potential instances of unlawful online gambling can be reported. Ahead of today's Operation Against Gambling Addiction, the GRN has acknowledged receiving over 1,500 such reports since January 2023.
GRN Praise for Informant System Usage
GRN board member Robert Green has commended the high level of usage of the GRN's informant system in a public announcement:
This move is significant in spreading understanding of the hazards resulting in gambling addiction. We are aligned in our pursuit of preventing gaming and betting addiction. [...] Tips from the general public submitted through our whistleblower channel are instrumental. – Robert Green, GRN board member, Source: GRN
The GRN also highlighted that the reports were approximately evenly distributed between unauthorized gambling platforms and suspected misconducts by licensed online gambling service providers. Reports encompassed online slots, sports betting, various gambling types, and gambling advertisements.
GRN Acts in Various Arenas
In 2023, the GRN has scrutinized 1,860 websites and 438 gambling service providers, initiating 133 prohibition procedures. 63 providers had to halt their operations or cease their advertisements.
This suggests a trend that the GRN not only manages the licensing of gambling service providers but also imposes penalties and hinders illegal offer promotion.
The GRN also targets strengthening collaboration with gambling addiction organizations and promotingintensified research on gambling.
Need for Improved Tip Quality
Despite the buoyancy surrounding anonymous tipster activities, the GRN has also cited the need for enhancing the quality of numerous tips due to insufficient evidence to investigate the reported concerns. Consequently, a guide has been incorporated into the informant page to facilitate a better handling of potential cases.
For the offline sector, there's another reporting platform named illegal-gambling.de. However, no evidence of its success seems to have surfaced yet.
GRN board member Robert Green also praised the usage of online casinos in Germany as a significant source of information, stating that tips from the public about potential issues on these platforms are crucial in their fight against gambling addiction. The GRN has acknowledged receiving numerous reports about online casinos Germany, highlighting their commitment to addressing concerns related to both unauthorized gambling platforms and suspected misconduct by licensed providers.
