Limited to Germany only. - Rare trees stop construction of a cycling route in Munich.

In 2020, construction on a bridge started. As the Isar River contains dirty water, a new sewer network was established, costing 13 million euros. At the same time, the dangerous area where cyclists and pedestrians' passageway cross was to be fixed. This was necessary as the underpass beneath the bridge, utilized by both groups, was deemed too narrow. Cyclists were only permitted to travel northbound. When heading in the opposite direction, they had to get off their bikes and push them for 35 meters.

The network of canals was completed by early 2024, as well as the northern 400,000 euro bike path, divided from the footpath. Unfortunately, this cycle path is going nowhere, stopping abruptly at a bridge intersection and barricaded by construction fences.

The other side of the bridge: these trees still need to be felled

This cycleway was finished in the north section, but the southern path is still on hold. A new underpass and ramp must be built beforehand. However, nature conservation may hinder the progress of the project.

Most cyclists use the narrow path despite the ban

To sum up, it is unclear when construction on the southern path will start. Shouldn't the city have known about this before?

As this is a separate construction project, it must be subjected to bidding and awarding again. Based on the department of building's estimates, the costs will likely mirror those in the north. This means another 400,000 euros from taxpayers.
