Through Instagram, a popular online photo-sharing platform - Özil's anti-Israel statement
In an Instagram Story by Mesut Özil (35), a map of Israel is shown, with the word "Israel" crossed out by a red cross. The text "Palestine" is written in blue font beneath it.
The disturbing post from the 2014 World Cup winner can be interpreted as a call for the demise of the Israeli state.
Another picture depicts Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (74) clad in orange attire and incarcerated. The caption reads "War criminal. Child murderer and genocide. Satanyahu." It is followed by images of burning tents and children's hands. "What guilt do I have?", it approximately states. The post parrots the propaganda of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who refers to Netanyahu as a "vampire."
Özil had previously voiced his support for Hamas' merciless assaults on Israel last year. The ex-athlete made a statement with the hashtag "Free Palestine" (Free Palestine).
Following the attack on a hospital in Gaza City, Özil inquired on X: "Is there any justification in this world to bombard innocent people and particularly infants every day, hour after hour, to kill them? Certainly not!!! This is such a nightmare - where is humanity, people?"
Soon after, it was revealed: There had been no Israeli airstrike, but a misfired rocket that the terrorists intended to fire at Israel - and it took fewer lives than initially reported by Hamas propaganda. Regardless, Özil failed to clarify his statement.
The conflict between Israel and the terrorist organization Hamas has been ongoing for more than seven months. Hamas fighters infiltrated Israel on October 7 and perpetrated a massacre. Hundreds of militants from the Gaza Strip entered Israeli territory and wreaked havoc, slaughtering civilians. Additionally, several individuals were captured as captives in the Gaza Strip. Israel responded to this with a military operation - with the goal of annihilating Hamas posts.
Since the onset of their assault in Rafah in southern Gaza in early May, around 300 fighters of the fundamentalists have been reported killed by Israeli authorities.
