NFL Lifts Suspension for Calvin Ridley after a Year for Wagering on Football Games

Calvin Ridley, previously suspended for breaching the NFL's gambling regulations, has been reinstated as of Monday. The league's short statement declared that he can now participate in all team activities with his new team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, without delay.

The league found out that Ridley, while still a member of the Atlanta Falcons, placed bets on NFL games, even on his own team, after being placed on the non-football injury list by the team in November 2021. Ridley took a break from football to deal with mental health issues.

Officially, Ridley was given an open-ended suspension for betting on NFL games, but he was eligible to apply for reinstatement after the 2022 season ended in February, which he did.

'Mistake in Judgment'

Upon his trade to the Jaguars last November, the team welcomed him to the squad on social media after the reinstatement announcement.

In a statement, the Jaguars expressed eagerness to develop a relationship with the four-year pro.

"We're thrilled to see Calvin competing alongside his new teammates during our Offseason Program in April and into the 2023 season as we chase a championship for Jacksonville," the team said.

In a statement issued by the Jags, Ridley commented on the league's decision, closing "a trying phase of my professional life." He regarded the gambling incident as a self-inflicted predicament triggered by "an isolated instance of poor decision-making."

"I've admitted my errors and this is no exception. I have immense admiration for the game and am eager for the opportunity to restart my career in Jacksonville. I eagerly anticipate showcasing my new coaches, teammates, and the entire Jaguars organization the true extent of my abilities and character as a player and individual," he added.

Before taking a break during the 2021 season, Ridley was cementing himself as one of the top receivers in the league. After amassing 127 receptions for 1,687 yards and 17 touchdowns in his first two seasons, he recorded 90 receptions for 1,374 yards during the 2020 season.

During his suspension, Ridley has been working out. If he can recover his 2020 form, the 28-year-old should bolster a team that made it to the playoffs the previous season.

NFL's Policy on Gambling

The NFL's gambling rules are straightforward.

League employees cannot wager on any part of an NFL game, practice, or event, nor can they get involved with any illegitimate gambling operation. Players are allowed to bet on other sports, but other league personnel, including coaches, front office executives, and referees, are prohibited from doing so.

This led to former New York Jets receivers coach Miles Austin III receiving a suspension in December. He is contesting the ruling.
