New Jersey's Atlantic City Casinos Promote Gambling Destination as a Perfect Fall Escapade

Atlantic City may not boast the picturesque autumn foliage of Vermont or the scenic trails and parks in other Northeastern states, but it's trying to position itself as a fall vacation spot.

The Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ) is the organization representing the nine casinos along New Jersey's coast. This week, the trade group urged families and tourists who are planning a fall getaway to consider Atlantic City.

"Although Atlantic City is known for its bustling summer season, fall is just as captivating for us at this seaside destination," asserted Mark Giannantonio, the president of both CANJ and Resorts Casino Hotel. "There's so much to enjoy this fall."

You can indulge in Atlantic City's culinary delights during Restaurant Week from October 1-6. The Atlantic City Marathon, which includes an 8-mile oceanfront run, is happening on October 22.

Some significant conferences are expected to attract visitors this fall, such as the 2023 New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) Convention from November 5-11 and the 2023 New Jersey League of Municipalities Annual Conference from November 14-16.

Gaming Revenue Increases, Profits Decrease

Atlantic City casinos have experienced a 2.3% increase in brick-and-mortar gross gaming revenue (GGR) from January to July 2023. With gamblers wagering on slots and table games, the casinos have earned over $1.64 billion from the gaming floors in 2023. This generates a rise of over $36.5 million compared to the same period in 2022.

Despite the enhanced gaming revenues, Atlantic City's casino profits decreased by 17% for the first two quarters of 2023. Only Bally's, Caesars, and Ocean have managed to raise their profits from the previous year.

Increased operating costs due to inflation and casinos wrestling for workers have cramped profit margins. Still, a busy third quarter (July, August, and September) might help reverse the profit trend. To achieve this, the casinos need to maintain occupancy in their hotel rooms following Labor Day.

The nine Atlantic City casinos with their 15,518 guestrooms had a 70% occupancy rate from January to June. While this is slightly higher than the corresponding six months in 2022, the average nightly rate was just $166—an insignificant increase of $3 year-on-year or 1.8%.

In the meantime, the US Consumer Price Index revealed a 4% hike in inflation over the previous 12 months.

Novelties to Attract Visitors this Autumn

Atlantic City casinos are offering new attractions for both returning and new visitors this fall.

Bally's has opened a brand-new sportsbook with a 25-foot-wide LED video wall as part of its $100 million renovation. Boxing champions will also battle in its revamped showroom on September 29.

The Golden Nugget is hosting the Atlantic City In-Water Boat Show this weekend, allowing tourists to browse the latest yachts, cruisers, and sport fishing boats.

Atlantic City will also attract a range of popular entertainment acts this fall. They'll perform at Hard Rock, including Machine Gun Kelly, Zac Brown Band, Foreigner, and The Doobie Brothers.

Music lovers can catch performances by The Beach Boys at Caesars, Boyz II Men at Borgata, Duran Duran, Evanescence, Chicago, and Ashanti & Ginuwine at Ocean.

This fall brings a myriad of renowned comedians to Atlantic City. Among them are John Mulaney, Jon Stewart, and Pete Davidson (performing together), Trey Kennedy, Nikki Glaser, Tracy Morgan, and Nate Bargatze.
