Widespread Presence of Gambling Advertisements in Football Leagues
Nearly all but one football league players are endorsed by gambling companies, drawing opposition from spectators and national political figures.
As reported by the Frankfurter Rundschau, a stark majority of Bundesliga clubs, to be exact, 17 out of 18, have a partnership with gambling industries. The only exception is VfL Bochum, who are currently seeking new sponsors. It appears that none of the Bundesliga clubs steadfastly refuses to collaborate with gambling providers.
Sports betting providers are particularly prevalent in the sponsors' list of clubs, but even online casinos and lotteries supply funding to promote the gambling offers of these sponsors.
Last season, almost three-quarters of all Bundesliga clubs featured a bookmaker as their sponsor, according to an evaluation by Statista.
VfB Stuttgart Leads the Pack
Currently, VfB Stuttgart is most prominently advertising for a gambling company, with the logo of the sports betting provider WINAMAX appearing on their jerseys this season. However, the specific reasons for this adaptation have not been disclosed publicly.
Bleak Outlook by Addiction Commissioner
Burkhard Blienert, the addiction commissioner of the federal government, has raised significant concerns about the prevalence of gambling advertisements in the Bundesliga. He predicted that fans would ultimately bear the brunt of this multibillion-dollar industry – first with their bets, and later, unfortunately, also with their health, social network disintegration, and financial instability.
Blienert has long advocated for stricter regulations or an outright ban on gambling advertisements.
Fan Concerns and Reactions
Not every fan is content with the involvement of gambling providers. Last year, Stuttgart fans voiced their discontent with WINAMAX as a sponsor – an issue that has now led to the early termination of the partnership. The reasons for this decision cannot be definitively determined.
Fans of FC St. Pauli praised their team for no longer promoting bwin and vowed to refrain from backing sports betting providers in the future. However, theFC St. Pauli quickly presented a new sponsor from the gambling industry, the Spielbank Hamburg.
It remains to be seen if the sponsorship landscape in the Bundesliga will shift in the future, and if politics will have any influence in this regard. So far, there are few indications that clubs will lower their advertising intensity for gambling companies.
In light of these concerns, some German football fans are actively avoiding clubs with strong ties to online casinos Germany, such as FC St. Pauli's recent switch from bwin to Spielbank Hamburg.
Despite the criticism, online casinos and other gambling providers continue to securing sponsorship deals with Bundesliga clubs, with VfB Stuttgart currently showcasing WINAMAX on their jerseys.
