Creatures - Wildlife - Munsterland show: Young wild horses are haltered for the first time
At the wild horse arena in the Merfelder Bruch nature reserve by Dülmen, it's tradition to corral the young stallions on sunny Saturday afternoons. Here, the main attraction involves the mares and their foals walking into the arena. Long before the horses' hooves come into view, the crowd hears their rhythmic pounding.
The capturers and two female co-catchers divide the mares and stallions in the arena, efficiently slipping halters onto the young horses. This part of the process can be risky. In a recent development, women participated in the event within the arena.
The wild horse auction, a yearly occurrence, helps maintain the herd of about 400 animals. These events are organized by the owner, Rudolf Duke of Croÿ. The main purpose of the auction is to preserve the herd by removing yearling stallions to prevent competitions among the male horses.
