Massachusetts Residents to Experience Launch of DraftKings Sportsbook in Local Territory

In Massachusetts, online sportsbook giant DraftKings, hailing from Boston, is poised to commence operations on the day that internet-based sports betting becomes legal in the state. This and the subsequent events mark a significant milestone, approximately a decade since DraftKings' inception as a daily fantasy sports platform.

Established in 2012, DraftKings initially launched with a base in one-on-one baseball contests. The company consequently garnered attention from various investment firms, aiding in a significant marketing campaign that resulted in numerous complaints from sports enthusiasts regarding the platform's relentless advertisements during TV commercial breaks.

A merger between DraftKings and rival FanDuel was barred by the Federal Trade Commission in 2017. Post the US Supreme Court's decision to nullify the federal ban on single-game sports betting in May 2018, DraftKings changed its focus from daily fantasy sports to sports betting.

Today, sports betting is legal in over 30 states, including Massachusetts.

On January 31, 2023, sports betting action first began in the state, confined to the three casino sportsbooks.

DraftKings' Local Triumph

Although sports betting in Massachusetts officially launched on January 31, DraftKings was not among the three retail sportsbooks that were operating on the day.

These outlets were designated for the state’s three commercial casinos – Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield, and Plainridge Park. The sportsbook partners connected to these casinos, able to operate both in-person and online betting, are WynnBet, BetMGM, and Barstool.

Massachusetts' sports betting legislation allows for online sportsbooks not tied to brick-and-mortar casinos. DraftKings has secured a Category 3 sports betting permit, awarded by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission in January.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is preparing to permit online sportsbooks to initiate wagers on March 10.

"It's been more than 10 years since we launched DraftKings from a spare bedroom in Watertown, and we are now thrilled to have the opportunity to bring a secure and legal sports betting product to millions of devoted sports fans across Massachusetts," said Jason Robins, DraftKings' co-founder. "This launch will signify a major milestone for our company and we're proud to become the hometown sportsbook for customers in the commonwealth."

DraftKings has partnerships with the NFL's New England Patriots, based near Plainridge Park at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, as well as with the NBA's Boston Celtics and the NHL's Boston Bruins. These teams play their home games at the TD Garden.

rivals and Competitors

DraftKings won't be the sole online sportsbook to establish its operations on March 10. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has deemed seven other sportsbook platforms eligible for online wagering.

Apart from DraftKings, WynnBet, BetMGM, and Barstool (the three casinos' online sportsbook partners), the Massachusetts Gaming Commission has approved Caesars Sportsbook, FanDuel, and Betr for online sports betting.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is expected to officially issue the licenses to these seven online sportsbook operators on Wednesday.
