Memorial Celebration - Light artist illuminates Jewish memorial for slain individuals
Berlin's Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe now has a temporary lighting installation from Hamburg artist Michael Batz. He created a "non-place" beside the site's 2,710 stelae (designed by Peter Eisenman) using minimalist light. The installation is meant to invites people's personal thoughts and emotions. The artwork aims to foster understanding among different religious backgrounds. Batz declared, "Light is the start of everything. Light is encounter. Light is movement, light is life. Light is there for everyone, regardless."
The Hamburg cultural group Mit2wo Kulturnetzwerk, behind the project, stated that the place lit up with light should be filled with heartfelt emotions. This installation highlights the need for individuals to connect with each other spiritually.
Batz had previously enlightened the Bundestag in 2009 using 400 lamps, and furnished the Reichstag building's four facades, along with all the external staircases and roof sculptures, with warm white light. Only the entrance area was previously illuminated.
