Kansas Tribe Prepares to Offer Sports Betting, Pioneering the State

The Prairie Band Casino and Resort in Kansas is preparing to become the first tribal casino to offer sports betting. The casino plans to open a new sportsbook by the end of 2022.

The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation approved a Tribal-State Gaming Compact in May, which paved the way for an on-site sportsbook at their location in Mayetta, Kansas. This is around 25 miles north of Topeka.

"After extensive research, we've found a place for [Prairie Band Sportsbook] in the sports betting market," said Bill Marsh, General Manager in a recent press release.

The casino opened in 1998 and is one of four tribal casinos in Kansas. It boasts 1,200 slot machines, 25 table games, a 400-seat bingo hall, as well as dining and other amenities.

In addition, they've partnered with the "world's leading odds provider and others," according to Chris Garrow, Director of Gaming. Unfortunately, the identity of their partner is still undisclosed. He also mentioned that the sportsbook is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of this year.

Prior to this, the casino offered free-to-play pick'em challenges for major sporting events like the Super Bowl and NCAA basketball tournament, with prizes up to $1,000,000. These challenges were well-received by their guests and staff.

Sports betting kiosks will be installed throughout the casino, including the sportsbook. Loyalty rewards similar to those for slots, table games, and bingo will be available to customers.

Sports betting has been legal in Kansas since 2022, with operators like Barstool Sportsbook, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, and PointsBet already established. In April alone, sportsbooks in Kansas handled nearly $133 million in wagers and earned over $9 million in revenue. The state received $919,720. Overall, since its legalization, operators have settled over $1.5 billion in wagers, earning $45.5 million, and contributing $4.5 million to the state's coffers.

Kansas legalized sports betting ahead of its neighbors Missouri and Oklahoma, where it remains illegal. Nebraska also legalized sports betting, but it is not yet functional. Kansas legalized sports betting in September 2022.

This is a significant step forward for the Prairie Band Casino and Resort as they expand their offerings to include sports betting.
