Biden elaborates in a broadcast address. - Israel suggests a full cessation of hostilities.

What is the Israeli plan all about?

– In the first six weeks, there's a call for a full halt in violence.

– The removal of Israeli forces from populated areas in Gaza is also on the table.

Hostages as a bargain chip

– A set of hostages, consisting of women, older folks, and injured individuals, are to be released. In exchange, Israel plans to let go of "hundreds of Palestinians" from its prisons.

– During the six-week cease-fire, Hamas and Israeli officials are expected to discuss a permanent peace treaty.

– If Hamas complies with the terms, Israel suggests that a short-term halt to fighting would eventually lead to a permanent cessation of hostilities.

Hamas responds with cautious optimism – but is it just another trick?

Joe Biden cautioned against missing the opportunity for peace. He referred to Israel's latest proposal as a "plan for a permanently established truce as well as the release of all captives." He added, "Hamas must seize this opportunity."

– This proposal has been shared with Hamas through Qatari intermediaries. So far, the terrorists seem to have responded favorably, with AFP citing them as describing the plan as "positive."

However, history shows that Hamas isn't known for its reliability. It's been fond of playing games, delaying, and deceiving in the past. Their end goal has consistently been maintaining power in Gaza and plotting to destroy Israel from there.

Baerbock demands action from Hamas

Annalena Baerbock (43, Alliance 90/The Greens) also weighed in on the Israeli proposal. On Twitter, she wrote: "Israel's proposal, which President Biden explained and confirmed today, offers a glimmer of hope and could potentially be the way out of this vicious cycle of conflict."

Baerbock puts the responsibility on Hamas. They must now act and show their willingness to end the violence. "Each day that the captives remain in the hands of Hamas is one day too many."
