In the future, cancer patients are set to receive the best treatment possible through the health reform. This will be achieved by certifying clinics and centers.
According to Lauterbach's plans, expert surgeons achieve the best outcomes and therefore the highest survival rates in complex surgeries. Prof. Dr. Carolin Tonus, Chief Surgeon of General and Visceral Surgery and Medical Director at the Asklepios Clinic St. Georg in Hamburg, confirms this, saying, "Experienced surgeons achieve the best results and therefore the greatest survival chances in complex surgical interventions. As part of the treatment of cancer patients in certified centers, Lauterbach's reform includes the "Federal Clinic Atlas." The Asklepios Clinic Group, where Prof. Tonus works, states, "The Clinic Atlas currently offers no benefits to interested citizens."
The German Hospital Association has acknowledged several major flaws in the Atlas, including incorrect statements about equipment, emergency levels, and case numbers. For now, cancer patients would be better off using the "German Hospital Directory" for guidance.
