Hit musical "SIX" will premiere at the Venetian Las Vegas on March 21.
The iconic Las Vegas Strip is set to gain a new stage production next week as "SIX the Musical" makes its debut at the Venetian. This empowering musical, created by the award-winning duo Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, sees King Henry VIII's six wives discussing their experiences in a lighthearted competition. The winner will lead their girl group, modeled after famous pop stars like Adele, Beyoncé, and Ariana Grande.
A press release describes the show as a "21st century celebration of girl power," with each wife taking centre stage to revamp 500 years of heartache into a euphoric performance.
The production broke a weekly box office record on Broadway, earning $1.65M at the 1K-seat Lena Horne Theatre. It was also favored by critics, garnering 23 awards during its 2021-2022 run, including Tony Awards for best original score and best costume costume design for a musical.
Potential Challenges for Production Shows
"SIX" was initially announced for a seven-week run in the 600-seat Palazzo Theatre. Though it may seem pessimistic, it's worth considering if the show's truncation was merely a precaution against closing prematurely, given how other productions have faced similar fates in the past.
Despite entertainment spending recovering to pre-pandemic levels on the Strip, it appears that large-scale Broadway-style productions are struggling due to competition from popular superstar residencies and shifting entertainment preferences among tourists.
Recent productions like "Awakening" at the Wynn are only filling half their seats on weekends, while even Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Freestyle Love Supreme" wasn't able to last more than two months at the Venetian's 700-seat Summit Showroom. Over the last quarter of 2022, 5 production shows ended before making it to 2023.
Deja Vu?
What's more, "SIX" will be the first production show to be staged on the Las Vegas Strip following its performance at another venue in the area. From September 20 to October 2, 2022, it was staged at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Therefore, the majority of the region's 2.7M residents have likely already seen the show.
Opened in 2012, the 2K-seat Smith Center in downtown Las Vegas is the region's first theater specifically designed for hosting touring Broadway productions. The Venetian version will feature the same North American Tour company, with Khaila Wilcoxon as Catherine of Aragon, Storm Lever as Anne Boleyn, Jasmine Forsberg as Jane Seymour, Olivia Donalson as Anna of Cleves, Didi Romero as Katherine Howard, and Gabriela Carrillo as Catherine Parr. The cast also includes Kelsee Kimmel, Erin Ramirez, Cassie Silva, and Kelly Denice Taylor.
"SIX" will perform eight times a week, at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays; at 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Saturdays; and at 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets, starting at $69.99, are available on VenetianLasVegas.com.
