1,100 hopefuls, only 1 victor. - HE has taken on the role of a lighthouse keeper.

A 37-year-old named Daniel Jochheim has just been appointed as the new lighthouse keeper on the eastern Frisian island of Wangerooge (Lower Saxony). They did the official introductions during the lighthouse festival on Whit Monday. Daniel, along with his wife Kathrin and their two kids, was present at the grand reopening of the redecorated island museum that's part of the lighthouse. After seeing the job ad in Feb, they decided to apply. With over 1100 applicants, Daniel was selected from the top 10 candidates.

Daniel, a skilled mechanic, had been to Wangerooge a few times before as they enjoyed taking vacations there. They even spent their honeymoon on this island in 2017. Interestingly, if they knew they could get married there, they would have definitely held the ceremony at the lighthouse. But, even without the wedding ceremony, it was a dream come true for the couple because they've always wanted to visit the North Sea. They initially planned to move to the coast after retirement. However, they embraced the opportunity when the job ad popped up.

His mechanical skills, as well as his business know-how, make him a perfect match for this role. Climbing the 161 steps leading to the observation tower is part of his daily routine, so his hobbies of hiking, swimming, and cycling help him with that.

The 39-meter-high, listed Old Lighthouse is one of the North Sea island's landmarks

The demand for this position attracted 1100 applicants from all over Germany. There were around 45 individuals who got interviewed. Eventually, Jochheim became their top pick.

Rieka Beewen, the general representative of the mayor on Wangerooge, expressed great relief at finding a qualified person for this post. The crew is now excited to start working with him. His responsibilities will include managing ticket sales, controlling the admission, and selling souvenirs in the newly-opened museum. He'll start on June 1st.

Wangerooge (7.94 square meters) is the easternmost East Frisian island, a magnet for countless holidaymakers every year
