On Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron kicks off a nearly three-day state visit to Germany. This is the first time a French president has made a visit like this in 24 years. Macron will arrive in Berlin at around 2 p.m. and begin with a trip to the democracy festival in the government district, where he'll join Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in celebrating 75 years of the Basic Law. This will be followed by a welcoming ceremony with military honors, political discussions, a press conference, a stroll through the Brandenburg Gate, and a state dinner at Bellevue Palace in the evening.
Steinmeier, the host, says the visit aims to emphasize and celebrate the one-of-a-kind nature of the Franco-German friendship. Additionally, the leaders hope the trip will inspire Germans to participate in the upcoming European elections in two weeks.
At the government level, relations between Berlin and Paris are currently considered strained. Both cities frequently clash on major issues, including support for Ukraine and economic policy in relation to the U.S. and China. These topics will be discussed after the state visit at a Franco-German ministerial council on Tuesday evening at Schloss Meseberg north of Berlin.
Ahead of that, Macron and his wife Brigitte will head to Dresden on Monday. There, the French President will deliver a speech on European policy in front of the Frauenkirche in the afternoon. On Tuesday, they're off to Münster, where Macron will receive the International Peace of Westphalia Prize, with Steinmeier giving the laudatory speech.
