Former NFL Player Marshawn Lynch Evades Prison Following DUI Agreement

In a Las Vegas court, former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch, 37, has managed to evade a potential DUI conviction and possible jail sentence. This outcome came about after a deal was negotiated between lawyers on both sides.

On May 3, no official plea was taken from Lynch in court. Instead, the deal involves him attending a traffic class, paying a $1,140 fine, completing 200 hours of community service, attending a victim impact panel, undergoing an alcohol evaluation, and staying out of legal trouble for the next year. If he meets all these requirements, then his initial DUI charge will be reduced to reckless driving, as per news reports.

Additionally, failure to drive in a travel lane and driving an unregistered vehicle charges were dropped. The agreement was struck just as a criminal trial was about to begin in this case. Lynch is expected to reappear in court in May, according to TMZ Sports.

Traces of Alcohol

These events stem from an August 2022 incident near the Las Vegas Strip, where Lynch's car suffered damage. Following the wreck, Lynch had blood alcohol levels of .18 - nearly double Nevada's legal limit of .08% - reports ProFootballTalk's Michael David Smith. Even though Lynch refused to take a breathalyzer test when police asked him to do so, a lab analysis was conducted later.

His legal team maintained he wasn't under the influence while driving. They said that the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 he was sleeping in was "undriveable," and it was parked in downtown Las Vegas with him at the wheel when authorities arrived.

LVMPD officers allegedly forced Lynch to the ground and then ordered him to roll over after his arrest, as reported by TMZ Sports.

"Mr. Lynch has not been convicted of any offense at this time," stated Las Vegas-based defense attorneys, Richard Schonfeld and David Chesnoff, in a statement to KLAS. "He has agreed to complete certain requirements, which will result in this case being closed as a reckless driving traffic offense."

History of Criminal Charges

Despite this recent arrest, this isn’t the first time Lynch has run into legal problems, according to Deadspin. A 2008 hit-and-run saw him pleading guilty to the charge after crashing into a woman. In 2012, he was arrested for a DUI, which was then lowered to reckless driving. He admitted guilt to the reduced charge.

Lynch enjoyed an 12-year NFL career with three teams: the Seattle Seahawks, Buffalo Bills, and Oakland Raiders. He previously played college football at the University of California and was also named an All-American. Following his retirement in 2019, he is now a BetMGM brand ambassador.
